Gulu City, Uganda – The Chief Justice of Uganda, Alfonse Owiny-Dollo Chigamoy, inaugurated the newly established Rocco Paco office in Gulu City on Thursday. This new coordination office is located in the former U-Touch Training Centre building, adjacent to the office of the Gulu City Mayor.
During the launch, Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo expressed his gratitude to the Gulu District Local Government for generously providing the structure that now houses the Rocco Paco team. He emphasized the importance of this office in facilitating the implementation of the Gurre Me Pongdwong (Acholi Unity) resolutions, a set of initiatives aimed at fostering peace, unity, and development within the Acholi sub-region. “This office will empower the Rocco Paco team to coordinate effectively and drive our collective vision for Acoli forward,” he remarked.
Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo extended his gratitude to Talanta Finance Limited for generously providing the office space that previously housed the Rocco Paco team. He acknowledged Talanta’s crucial support in creating an environment that enabled the team to operate effectively before transitioning to the new office.
Owiny-Dollo also commended the resilience and unity of the Acholi people in rallying behind the Gurre Me Pongdwong resolutions. He highlighted how the community’s steadfast commitment to these resolutions has led to substantial progress in recent months. The Chief Justice further acknowledged the support from various individuals and organizations who provided temporary accommodation for the Rocco Paco team during the search for a permanent office.
The event was attended by a diverse audience, including cultural, political, and religious leaders, representatives from non-governmental organizations, academics, and members of the Acholi community, both local and in the diaspora. This gathering underscored the widespread support for Rocco Paco’s mission and the strong community ties within the Acholi region.
In his closing remarks, Owiny-Dollo announced that the second edition of the Gurre Me Pongdwong event is scheduled to take place in December 2024. This annual event aims to bring together Acholi stakeholders to review progress, discuss challenges, and renew their commitment to achieving sustainable development and unity in the region.
